Family Traditions

Christmas is a time of tradition...family...reflection...celebration.

Why not begin a new family tradition this Christmas season! Go here http://bit.ly/7s2ovi to download a family advent calendar. Advent is the season leading up to Christmas.

Just think... in only 5 minutes a day you can instill the real meaning of Christmas into your kids' minds.

What are some of your family traditions? elf on a shelf? Christmas Eve dinners?

PowerJam notes from 11/8/09

COOPERATION is the virtue for November in PowerJAM! Wouldn't we all like our kids to cooperate a little more...with homework, cleaning their rooms, behaving, etc.

This month, we are focusing on cooperating with others, to work together to do more than you can do alone.

Challenge your kids this week to look for ways to help somebody succeed. Just like Aaron and Hur helped Moses in Exodus 17:8-13.

Use these questions to start some conversations in your family this week:
  • What are some things that get in the way of us helping others succeed? (Our selfish motives, jealousy, etc.)
  • Why do you think it is important to God for us to cooperate and help others succeed?

Monthly Memory Verse: “Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.” Ecclesiastes 4:9, NIrV

Parenting Challenges

Where's the manual? Everything else comes with an instruction book. Yes we are supposed to look to the Bible, but I have yet to find the chapter that tells me what to do when my child has a tantrum in the grocery store because I would not buy him his favorite candy bar! Reminding him to 'honor his mother' just didn't seem to work. Often on this parenting journey, we have to learn as we go. And what's worse...what works for one child does not necessarily work for another!

We're a few weeks into school now and, for the most part, we've figured out the homework routine. But we're still way behind on getting everyone to pick up after themselves. Toys, cups, shoes, towels...you name it, they've left it all over the house. I even put a sign on the family room door. Didn't work. Yelling "I am not your maid" has not seemed to help either. It does makes me feel better though...for about 2 seconds.

How about you? What is your biggest parenting challenge? What are you struggling with?

homework? attitudes? bed time? sibling rivalry?

What is making you pull your hair out???

Summer Student Ministry by Angie Frame

Our student ministry, Phusion, is running fast and furiously this summer. Forty-one high school and college students and adults went on a mission trip to Knoxville already this summer. A week later, another team left. They are at a camp in South Carolina right now called Passport Choices.Next week the Macedonia mission trip departs for Europe. Whew! Makes me tired just trying to wrap my mind around it, and jet lag isn’t even an issue yetJ

In the midst of all that travel, we are still offering some local ministry events. It’s summer, so we’re taking a break from our weekly small groups and our program (FOCUS). Instead, we’re offering events that students can come to, but more importantly that their friends and families can attend, too. Our summer schedule is designed for students to be able to come and have fun, even if they’re new. It’s a great, unintimidating time for students to invite their friends. We also welcome families and parents! Last Sunday we went to the movies together, and some parents and younger siblings came with the teenager.

Here are the remaining summer events. Hope to see you and your family there!

Mega Camp Day #5 Meeting Basic Needs

Jesus fed 5,000 (Mark 6:30-44; John 6:1-14)
  • An unlikely hero may be the key to victory.
  • God provides what we need for victory.
Thanks to all for a great week! Our campers and volunteers were all phenomenal!!!

PS - Lightning bolts will be available in PowerJam Sunday, July 12, for those that bring back Day 5 Sports Flashes.

Mega Camp Day #4 The Final Battle

Ironic that we talked about storms on Tuesday, then we get a storm on Wednesday.
Today we learned about Jesus rising from the dead. Our two key points:
  • To be undefeated you need extrordinary power.
  • Jesus supplies the power to win the final battle.
Matthew 27:45-28:10

Mega Camp days #3 Outside Problems

  • Storms are not always predictable.
  • God is never surprised by storms.
Jesus calms the wind and sea. Luke 8:22-25

Mega Camp Day #2 Inside Problems

Today we learned:
  • Inside problems can be more important than outside problems.
  • God can conquer inside problems.
Jesus healed a paralyzed man. Mark 2:1-12

Mega Camp Day #1 Obstacles in Life

Our first day was a blast! Our theme for the whole week - Undefeated!
We learned:
  • Victory does not depend on the length of the battle
  • Victory depends on Jesus!
Jesus healed two women. Mark 2:21-23

Orangeology

Orangeology-the philosophy of the color orange.

The family represents love (red). The church represents the light of Christ (yellow). When you combine the two forces of the family and the church, you get orange.

Two combined influences can make a greater impact than just two influences.

What if the primary mission of the church is not to help the family, and the number one priority of the family is not to go to church? What if they are both designed to work together to show a generation who God is?

PCC has always wanted to partner with parents. Recently our preschool, elementary, and students pastors all got together to brainstorm ways that we can do that better. What are your ideas on how we can 'think orange' at PCC?

Using the movie "Up" as a teachable moment

If you're a parent like me (super busy juggling work, household, sports, homework, etc) then you don't often think about ways to make 'teachable moments' happen with your kids. I'm thankful for fellow blogger and children's pastor Sam Luce from Utica, NY who wrote a post about Pixar's new movie Up. (see the full post here)

If (and when, becuase you know school's almost out and we have to have something else to do besides go to the pool) you go see the movie, ask some of these questions and make your own 'teachable moment' with your child!

1. What is a true friend?

2. What is most important in life?
3. Why do we need to keep our promises?
4. What does the bible say about keeping promises?
5. What is your idea of adventure?
6. If you could do one thing in life no matter how crazy or wild it sounds what would it be?
7. Which character was most loyal and why?
8. What was your favorite part, and why?
9. What does it mean to assist the elderly?
10. What is one way we as a family can assist an elderly person?
